Equality, inclusion and sports excellence The Paralympic Games are an international multi-sport competition aimed at athletes with disabilities, who reflect the highest sporting standards, of excellence and diversity, including:
• Quality – the fundamental principle regarding the degree of excellence and achievement.
• Excellence – represents the athlete’s performance in the context of a specific sport.
• Emotion – a vibrant, energetic and entertaining atmosphere is created, within each sport, and creates a motivating and attractive collective atmosphere for spectators and media.
• Inspiration – it creates a different opportunity for personal experience/reflection that acts as a catalyst for change by demonstrating the extraordinary.
The 14th Edition of the Paralympic Games will be held in London from August 29th to September 9th 2012 where approximately 5000athletes from 150 countries are expected to compete in 20 sports. It is noteworthy that this edition includes the return of athletes with intellectual disabilities who, after a gap of 12 years, will return to the Paralympic Games, in Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis.
Portugal plans to be represented in London by about three dozen athletes from at least four sports – Athletics, Boccia, Swimming and Rowing – who will try their best in order to overcome the challenge, thus embodying the motto of the Portugal Paralympic Committee – “Equality, Inclusion and Sports Excellence.”
