Olympic Games - London 2012
From July 27th to August 12th, the London 2012 Olympics will be held in the British capital, which corresponds to the 30th Olympiad, calling the world’s attention for one month of spectacular global media agenda. The Portuguese participation in this edition, featuring around eight dozens of athletes, is viewed with moderate optimism, as it is increasingly difficult to reach top positions, which are always random in sports, since the 204 National Olympic Committees competing prepare with diligence and invest considerable resources expecting a return in the self-esteem of the population.
The Olympic Games are recognized as the largest sporting event of the Modern Era, having a positive effect on the relationship between cultures, peoples and nations of all latitudes and creeds. They are the most visible expression of the ideal of the mentor of the foundations of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin. The Olympic Movement is a major phenomenon on a global scale, in defence of Peace, Human Rights, Gender Equality and the preservation of the environment, asserting itself as a vital force in promoting Sports for All, Ethics, Truth in Sports and in the respect for the rules of the game and towards the opponent. With the pretext of these Olympics, once again the partnership that has existed since the mid 20th century between the CTT – Correios de Portugal (Portuguese PTT) and the now centennial Olympic Committee of Portugal, with great symbolism and influence for the Portuguese sports sector, is now translated in the launch of a series of stamps dedicated to this theme. This initiative represents an opportunity for the promotion of the Olympics and its prime causes of education and civilizational values, while contributing to the enrichment of the national iconographic and philatelic memorabilia. It is also a pretext to evoke and celebrate the centenary of the first Portuguese Olympic participation in Stockholm in 1912, just three years after the creation of the Olympic Committee of Portugal, on the 26th of October 1909.
By publicly expressing appreciation for the vision of the CTT, a prestigious institution and an irreplaceable reference mark in our society that honours its history and justifies confidence in the future, the Olympic Committee of Portugal has the honour and the privilege of receiving this exceptional philatelic issue idealized in support of national objectives.
