King Carl Gustaf & Queen Silvia 2016
New colors for portrait stamps with the times
As you may know, Carl XVI Gustaf’s motto is “For Sweden – With the Times”. While working on the current portrait stamps of the King and Queen, the Swedish Court and PostNord discussed the design of the stamps in detail, with this motto as a key starting point.
These discussions eventually resulted in a design and color scheme that are an exciting, innovative reflection of the King’s motto.
“During the project, we consulted with designer Daniel Bjugård and photographer Anna-Lena Ahlström and selected several alternative colors for future portrait stamps. Just like in 2015, we have printed two nuances of the same color to achieve an effect that is reminiscent of the stamps of the King from the 1970s,” says Barbro Sjöberg, Stamp Project Manager at PostNord Stamps.
Another similarity between the current portrait stamps and the issue in January 2015 is the King’s and Queen’s monogram, respec- tively, used as a pattern. A special silver color has been used in the background. Decorative, but also a security detail that makes forgery more difficult.
The current portrait stamps are the third issue for the Bjugård-Ahlström team. They first worked together on the royal portrait stamps in 2015, followed by a second collaboration on Royal Anniversaries, three stamps in a mini- sheet issued on March 17 of this year that depict King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Estelle.
