National Species- The Brown Meagre 2016
Measuring between 30 and 40 cm, the brown meagre – Sciaena umbra – is a fish mainly active at night, but which can sometimes be found during the day around sea grass or rocky bottoms, or sheltering in caves or wide crevices. It swims in small shoals and hunts at night, feeding on small molluscs, crustaceans and other fish. The species is close to being endangered, and a 2013 decree banned fishing for brown meagre off the coast of the Provence-Alps-Côte d'Azur and Languedoc-Roussillon regions.
