World Cup 2010
For the third consecutive time, Portugal has qualified for the final phase of World Football. After a brilliant fourth place in the World Cup 2006, the national team will be competing in the 19th tournament of the biggest football competition in the world between 11 June and 11 July in South Africa, where it hopes to achieve a good place in the classification. In fact, it is the first time that this championship takes place on the African continent that has national teams of great quality and whose players belong to many of the best European football teams.
The World Football Cup was held for the first time in 1930, in Uruguay, which country won the tournament. It has been awarded every four years, except in 1942 and 1946 because of World War II.
Portugal’s first participation, in which it also achieved its best classification (3rd place), goes back to the year 1966, in England, when a star that would make history in world football excelled – Eusébio, considered the best goal scorer of that competition. Portugal also participated in the 1986 edition, in Mexico (17th place), in 2002, in South Korea/Japan (21st) and in 2006 in Germany (4th).
This great football event, with worldwide repercussions and budgets involving millions, rouses the passion of people of all ages, cultures and latitudes, mobilizes extraordinary communication media and countless professionals of numerous trades, wherefore the Portuguese Post Services (Correios de Portugal) felt that it had to be evoked on stamps as well. As it has been the case whenever the Country participates in a major sports event. For future memory and to celebrate the present.
